Modern Languages Tutors

  • Céline

    Tutor
University of Oxford - Modern Languages

Hello, my name is Céline! I’m a French student, recently returned from a year abroad in Paris, and a native Spanish and English speaker. I have previous experience tutoring both in France and for Jacari, a UK charity that helps school pupils whose first language is not English. Whilst I’m a modern languages student, my degree is almost entirely literature-based, and until the end of first year I studied History after achieving 3A*s at A-level in these subjects. I’m patient, friendly and proud to say my pupils don’t just learn from, but really enjoy my classes! The Humanities are often the hardest subjects to improve in, and we’re told ‘you either have the knack for it or not’-but this needn’t be the case. I pride myself on my ability to simplify and communicate strategies for developing the analytical skills needed to succeed in the humanities. One-to-one tutoring allows for a personalised style of teaching and my strength lies in creating a rapport with pupils that motivates us both to realise their potential. Looking forward to meeting you!

  • Yasmin

    Tutor
University of Oxford - Modern Languages

Hi! I’m Yasmin and I recently graduated from Oxford with a First in German. I studied French and German at A-Level, attaining first place in inter-school French debating and winning a prize for excellent achievement in German upon graduating. I have experience tutoring in both languages, and also taught German in a primary school lunchtime class while I was doing my A-Levels. My approach to teaching is very down-to-earth - I want my students to feel comfortable. Languages can be intimidating and, at times, humiliating to approach if you aren’t given the right tools to build your confidence. German grammar has a reputation for being particularly tricky, and it requires a personalised approach to be properly understood. What I can promise is that it does make sense, and that everyone is capable of grasping it once it’s been explained properly. I have a particular interest in German-English linguistics, which I developed at university. My experience in linguistics places me in a better position than my peers to really be able to break down grammar rules between the two languages. My first priority is making sure my students can understand and explain grammar rules in English - it’s absolutely essential for learning German and is great in helping students feel less out of their depths. I benefited from excellent language tuition at Oxford and am excited to pass on my knowledge!

  • Maude

    Tutor
University of Cambridge - Spanish and French

Hi everyone, I’m Maude! I’m currently reading for an MPhil in Spanish and French literature at King’s College, Cambridge, having just completed my undergraduate in Spanish and French there this June. In my final year of undergraduate study at Cambridge, I ranked fourth in my year overall (cohort of approx. 150), having achieved the highest grade in Spanish across the university, thanks to the brilliant supervisors and tutors I had throughout my undergraduate degree. I am really passionate about helping students with the learning of languages, as I know all too well how much effort and time is required - something that many schools are unfortunately unable to provide. I spent a year living across the Spanish-speaking world (in Spain, Colombia and Mexico), and so I have both a high level of Spanish fluency as well as the English proficiency needed for exams and essay writing. Now in my 5th year at Cambridge, I’m really comfortable with the supervision system and small class or one-to-one learning, and I strive to bring this experience to all of my tutoring sessions. I can’t wait to meet you!

  • Olivia

    Tutor
University of Cambridge - Modern Languages

Hi, my name’s Liv and I’m a final year student reading French, Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Cambridge. Having benefited from tutors throughout my education, I’m passionate about passing on the same friendly, down-to-earth approach that paid off for me. The students I’ve already tutored of all age groups over the years have seen marked improvements in their grades, but also in their general academic confidence. I firmly believe that no query is too small, no question too ‘stupid’; taking this approach to my own studies secured my place at Cambridge. My status as a college scholar, secured by my consistent firsts across the board, has not only left me proficient in everything from intricate French grammatical irregularities to medieval Spanish epic poetry, but also with first-hand knowledge of how to reach the uppermost echelons of academic success. I look forward to helping you all achieve your academic goals!

  • Charlotte

    Tutor
University of Cambridge - History and Modern Languages

Hi everyone, my name is Charlotte. I am a friendly and outgoing third-year History and Spanish student at the University of Cambridge. I have tutored students extensively in both History and Spanish, from beginners to GCSE levels, as well as teaching students in English Language and Literature. My previous students have gone on to achieve top grades in their tutored subjects, as well as gaining confidence and enjoyment in those areas. I achieved 3 A*s at A-level in Spanish, History and English literature, so am well-equipped to deliver a bespoke tutoring service to pupils of any level, seeking assistance in these disciplines. As a current student at Cambridge, I am taught by the university’s academic tutors daily, so I know exactly what skills and attributes they seek from candidates at interview. I look forward to sharing these insights as part of the OTC’s growing team of first-class tutors.

  • Jasmine

    Tutor
University of Oxford - Law and French

Hi, I’m Jasmine, a Law with French Law graduate from the University of Oxford (First Class Honours), having received the Family Law Prize for achieving the highest marks in my cohort, an Exhibition for my finals results, and two College scholarships. Prior to this, I achieved 3A stars at A-Level and 10A stars at GCSE. I am currently studying the Bar course in Bristol and am starting pupillage this October. Having volunteered throughout my time at Oxford with the Access team, I am passionate about debunking Oxbridge admissions myths and ensuring students feel confident in their applications, whatever their background. I’ve tutored students in Oxbridge admissions since my first year, so have 4+ years of relevant experience to deploy. I love hearing the answers students give in mock interviews and engaging in legal discussions with you, and will go through your personal statement with a fine-toothed comb to ensure it will stand out from the crowd. My tutoring approach is engaging but structured; we will make a plan at the start of our sessions and break tasks down into manageable chunks. I think the key to a strong Oxford Law application is a demonstrable ability to think critically and show confidence in your own opinions, something which we will make sure to develop in our sessions.

  • Lizzie

    Tutor
University of Cambridge - Classics and Arabic

Hi, my name is Lizzie and I have recently graduated with a degree in Classics and Oriental Studies (Arabic) at Magdalen College, Oxford. I studied Latin, Maths, and Spanish at A Level, achieving 3 A*s, and I have extensive experience tutoring and teaching at both primary and secondary level. I really work hard to get to know every pupil’s individual needs and make sure that everyone knows the goals we are aiming to hit: I know how helpful and beneficial it is to understand where we’re going at each stage. I also aim to make every session as enjoyable as possible, as this makes it so much more rewarding for everyone involved. My degree was incredibly broad, covering languages, history, literature, philosophy, and historical linguistics (and more!), so I can help with a broad range of topics and provide recommendations for any subjects you would like to delve into further. Having gone through the Oxford admissions process myself, I know what Oxbridge are looking for, right from personal statements all the way to interviews. I had a fantastic time at Oxford and really look forward to helping others have fun during the process and get ready for university!
